It is no secret that legendary film maker Martin Scorsese is a fan of the 3D format for upcoming films. His latest movie, Hugo, scored big at the box office and won the praise of many – including Avatar director James Cameron. However, what amy be a bit surprising to some of you is that Scorsese wants not just upcoming films to be shot in 3D, but older films to be restored into the 3D Blu-ray format as well.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese spoke recently at the 3D Creative Arts Awards hosted by the International 3D Society. He even received the Harold Lloyd award at the event.
Scorsese encouraged older 3D films, probably shown in anaglyph 3D, to make the transition to stereo 3D via the Blu-ray format. He said that some of these films were inspirations behind Hugo as well. These were some words coming directly from the legendary director:
“To see the films at home (on 3D Blu-ray) is going to be really remarkable. And to see them in their original form … seeing Dial M for Murder in 3D, in particular, is an entirely different experience.”
On top of receiving the Harold Lloyd award at the 3D Creative Arts Awards, Hugo won a lot of recognition as well. It even scored some of its own awards. These included an award for the best live action 3D feature and an award for the best 3D moment of the year – but we won't spoil it for you.
The 3D Blu-ray format is great because it offers both HD support and true stereoscopic 3D support. It also can make older classics appear modern again with a new layer of 3D behind them. Will Scorsese get his wish? I certainly hope so. I've never seen many of these classics, but with a modern technology restoration in full 3D, I wouldn't mind checking them out. One thing is for sure, expect Scorsese to shoot a lot of 3D films form now on.
