If you want more 3D content for your 3D TV, you’ll be happy to know that wealth TV now has a channel running on ROKU set top boxes.
The new TV channel has spent 2 years ramping up a production effort that has involved both in-house staff and outside production crews. The company has traveled the world capturing what they hope will be compelling 3D content. Programs will include adventure, travel, automotive, championship boxing, live events and cooking shows.
“WealthTV 3D allows viewers to travel the world and enjoy the finest experiences whether it’s touring Mayan ruins strolling the sandy beaches in the Seychelles or driving behind the wheel of a Bugatti, without leaving the comfort of their living room.” stated Robert Herring, CEO of Wealth TV.
WealthTV was a very early provider of high definition programming in 2004. The company also offered HD video-on-demand services in 2005, and began to offer 3D on-demand programming in 2010.
The current channel is operating on a 24/7 basis via the ROKU set top box. There are about 2.5 million of the devices in use in the United States. The company expects to launch more hardware partners sometime this year. It seems like a perfect fit for the AppleTV or even as an app built into any of the major TV brands. There’s nothing that stops a cable or satellite company from adding the 3D channel either.
To view the channel, in addition to the ROKU box, you’ll need a 3D TV and either active or passive 3D glasses.
While this is not an earthshaking announcement, it does show how 3D content is growing. With many new sets being offered, 3D is built in, although too often a buyer has to spring for glasses to see anything in 3D.
There’s a pretty big chicken-egg issue here. People don’t want 3D because there isn’t much to watch. There isn’t much to watch because there aren’t a lot of 3D sets out there. Both sides of the equation are now beginning to change, and that has to be a good result for all of us 3D enthusiasts.
