A patent was recently discovered that sheds light on some features that may be a part of Nintendo's upcoming home gaming console: the Wii U. The mentioned patent relates to Nintendo's tablet-like controller with a touchscreen that will be a part of the package.
According to ComputerAndVideoGames, the Wii U's controller may ship with an HD touchscreen that also offers glasses-free 3D abilities akin to Nintendo's portable gaming system: the 3DS.
“The most interesting of the filing's revelations is the possibility for the screen on the controller to don full HD resolutions (higher than currently revealed) and glasses-free 3D, like the 3DS,” according to the report.
The patent also details other features that may be included in the console like Web browsing, voice recognition, and even facial recognition (through the use of the controller).
A developer was quoted by ComputerAndVideoGames saying that Nintendo is constantly changing the final hardware of the console before it launches.
The Wii U should be an interesting system when it launches later this year. It really is the first gaming console I can think of that takes aspects of portable systems and blends it into a home system. However, part of this can be attributed to the tablet popularity rather than comparing the controller to a traditional handheld.
The controller is a wireless tablet with buttons coming off the sides of it and touch input available in the central display.
Expect the Wii U to ship around Christmas of 2012.
